Hospitalized
Grammy-winning Tejano singer Emilio Navaira was critically injured early Sunday when the bus carrying his band, Rio, crashed on a Houston highway, officials said. Navaira, 45, was listed in critical condition at Memorial Hermann Hospital, where he was in ICU, said hospital administrator Lisa Lagrone. Seven other passengers were injured.

Good intentions
No horses allowed
A man hoping to cheer up an ailing relative at a hospital in Lihue, Hawaii, hadn't considered one of the visitation rules: No horses allowed. The man, who thought the patient would enjoy seeing his stallion, rode the horse up an elevator to the third floor, where they were stopped by security.
The man's good intentions were further dashed when his relative was brought out to see the horse. "That's not my horse," the patient said to hospital staff.
Cookie defense
Driver blames Oreo
Police say a man's excuse for speeding through Salisbury, Conn., takes the cake — or, at least, the cookie. A state trooper who stopped the 1993 BMW last fall says its driver, 28-year-old Justin Vonkummer of Millerton, N.Y., blamed his driving problems on an errant Oreo. He said an Oreo had just slipped from his fingers as he dunked it in a cup of milk and he was trying to fish it out when he lost control of his car. Prosecutors learned in court this week that Vonkummer had been charged with speeding and driving under a suspended license — not driving under the influence, as a clerk had mistakenly noted in the records.
