Wedding bells for San Francisco mayor

Celebrity gossip, famous birthdays and other tidbits, compiled from Seattle Times news services.

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom, 40, proposed to actress Jennifer Siebel, 33, while they vacationed over the weekend in Hawaii, and she accepted, said Stanlee Gatti, a friend of the couple. It would be the first marriage for Siebel, 33, and the second for Newsom, whose four-year marriage to Kimberly Guilfoyle ended in divorce in March 2006. Siebel has a recurring guest spot on the NBC police drama "Life" and was in the film "In the Valley of Elah."

Wedding bells II

Roselyn Sanchez and fellow actor Eric Winter got engaged during a holiday vacation on the island of Vieques, just east of mainland Puerto Rico, according to a statement Tuesday. No wedding date was scheduled. Sanchez appears in the CBS series "Without a Trace." Winter has appeared in a variety of TV shows, including "Days of Our Lives."

Zoo opens for reception

Erica De Jesus and Mike Garcia were allowed to hold their long-scheduled wedding reception at the San Francisco Zoo on Monday night, even though the grounds have been closed since a tiger escaped on Christmas and mauled three people, killing one of them. De Jesus and Garcia went on their first date at the zoo 10 years ago. Because of the tiger attack, they and their 200 guests had to confine their celebration to a hall near the entrance gate. The zoo is scheduled to reopen Thursday.

Not-so-great escape

A burglary suspect planned to escape using a handcuff key his girlfriend would pass him during either a hug or a kiss in court, but he forgot one crucial factor, authorities said. James Miller allegedly discussed the plot with Theresa Fougere during phone calls from jail, calls that are monitored by the Norfolk County, Mass., sheriff's department. Miller, 38, who was being held on a charge of heroin possession and was a suspect in several store burglaries, has been charged with attempted escape and conspiracy. Fougere, 46, was arrested Monday. A sheriff's office spoke didn't know where she got the key.
