More SIFF offerings with local ties

"Outsourced" is one of a number of SIFF films with local connections. Here's an overview of the rest.

"Blood on the Flat Track: The Rise of the Rat City Rollergirls " (9:30 p.m. June 14, Neptune; 1:30 p.m. June 16, Neptune)

Lainy Bagwell and Lacey Leavitt's documentary profiles Seattle's own roller-derby team.

"Cthulhu " (6:30 p.m. June 14, Neptune; 4 p.m. June 17, Neptune)

Making its world premiere at the festival, Daniel Gildark's fantasy drama (inspired by H.P. Lovecraft and scripted by Seattle activist-turned-filmmaker Grant Cogswell) about a man returning to his hometown was filmed in Seattle and Astoria, Ore.

"King of Kong " (screened in festival last week, but returning to theaters in August)

Seth Gordon's documentary follows Redmond teacher Steve Wiebe in his pursuit to break the world record for the arcade game Donkey Kong.

"Kurt Cobain About a Son " (9:30 p.m. Saturday, Neptune)

An Independent Spirit Award nominee, AJ Schnack's documentary about Aberdeen native and Nirvana lead singer Cobain includes previously unheard audiotaped conversations.

"The Life and Times of Yva Las Vegass " (screened in festival last week)

Wiley Underdown's documentary looks at the life of Seattle street performer/musician Yva Las Vegass.

"Made in China ." (7:30 p.m. June 10, Neptune)

Seattle filmmaker John Helde examines his father's experiences growing up American in pre-World War II China in this very personal documentary.

"Monster Camp " (screened in festival last week)

Cullen Hoback's documentary follows the exploits of a Northwest chapter of the live-action-role-playing game Nero.

"Souls Without Borders: The True Story of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade " (7 p.m. Monday, Harvard Exit)

This documentary from Alfonso Domingo and Anthony L. Geist (professor/chair of the Spanish and Portuguese Studies department at the University of Washington) pays tribute to the International Brigades, an army of worldwide volunteers who gathered to fight fascism during the Spanish Civil War.

"Sweet Crude " (7 p.m. June 15, Neptune; 11 a.m. June 16, Neptune)

Screening as a work in progress, Seattle filmmaker Sandy Cioffi's documentary shines a light on the Niger Delta region, where villagers face extreme poverty despite the readiness of valuable crude oil.

The festival also includes a number of short films from local filmmakers, some of which are showcased in the collection "Northwest Ties" (Monday at 7 p.m. at the Egyptian) or the Fly Filmmaking Challenge, in which local film crews shoot and edit a 10-minute film in 10 days (June 13 at 4:30 p.m. at the Egyptian).
