Village Theatre's upcoming season features musicals, romantic comedy
Seattle Times theater critic
Village Theatre will be mounting a 2007-08 season that is a characteristic blend of new and old musicals and one well-established nonmusical play.
The lineup:
"Million Dollar Quartet": A new show written by Colin Escott and Floyd Mutrux about a musical encounter in 1956 among prime rockers Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins and Johnny Cash, at the old Sun Studios in Memphis. The show has a score composed of familiar rock oldies. Issaquah, Sept. 19-Oct. 28; Everett, Nov. 2-18.
"The King and I": The atmospheric Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein II musical about a Victorian-era English woman who becomes governess to the children of the King of Siam. Issaquah, Nov. 14-Jan. 6, 2008; Everett, Jan. 11-27, 2008.
"Barefoot in the Park": Neil Simon's early romantic comedy about a pair of newlyweds getting used to married life in a tiny walk-up apartment in New York. Issaquah, Jan. 23-March 2, 2008; Everett, March 7-23, 2008.
"Little Women": This musical is based on the classic Louisa May Alcott novel about New England sisters during the Civil War. But it is not the recent Broadway adaptation of the book, which came to the Paramount Theatre recently. This version was created by writer Sean Hartley, lyricist Alison Hubbard and composer Kim Oler. Issaquah, March 19-April 27, 2008; Everett, May 2-18, 2008.
"Aida": This long-running Broadway extravaganza sports a pop score by Elton John and Tim Rice, and retells the legend of an ancient Nubian princess — a saga immortalized earlier in the Verdi opera of the same title.
The Village Theatre performs each of its mainstage shows at its home theater, 303 Front St. N., Issaquah, then moves them on to a run at the Everett Performing Arts Center, 2710 Wetmore Ave., Everett. Details and subscription information: 425-392-2202 or www.villagetheatre.org.
