Saturday, November 13, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. Death Cab signs with Atlantic Records By Tom Scanlon
Well, it had to happen, sooner or later: Death Cab for Cutie, the indie-rock superstars from Seattle, finally signed with a big label. Atlantic Records yesterday announced the signing of Death Cab to "a long-term, worldwide deal." For the past few years, singer Ben Gibbard and company have resisted major-label interest and remained on Barsuk Records, the tiny Seattle label. Barsuk will release a live Death Cab EP in the spring, and after that, Atlantic will release the band's recordings. In an Atlantic news release, Death Cab guitarist/producer Chris Walla cited "Atlantic's willingness to support the way we do things in terms of marketing and creativity" as the reason for the move. In the same release, Craig Kallman, co-chairman of Atlantic, boasted "Death Cab For Cutie is an extraordinary band which has only just begun to unlock their full potential."
