Wednesday, April 21, 2004 - Page updated at 12:00 A.M. Burke gets $300,000 NEH grant
The National Endowment for the Humanities has awarded $300,000 to The Burke Museum of Natural History and Culture for the Bill Holm Center for the Study of Northwest Coast Art. The money will go toward an endowed research fund for the center, which supports appreciation of native art of the Pacific Northwest coast. Holm is a longtime Northwest scholar and author of the landmark 1965 book "Northwest Coast Indian Art, An Analysis of Form." The Burke aims to raise $1.5 million for the endowment by fall 2007 and has already brought in nearly $540,000, not including the new NEH grant. The endowment will be used to fund graduate student research, artists-in-residence, public education and other projects. An auction supporting the fund will take place May 23 at the Burke.
