Let the graduation festivities commence
The Ivy Cutting has been an annual rite of graduation at Seattle Pacific University since 1922.
Three major universities are having graduation ceremonies in Seattle this weekend. Expect heavy traffic before and after the events:
University of Washington: 1:30-4:30 Saturday at Husky Stadium
Seattle Pacific University: 2-5 p.m. Sunday at Safeco Field
Seattle University: Sunday at KeyArena. Undergrads: 9:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m.; graduate students: 3-5 p.m.
The Ivy Cutting has been an annual rite of graduation at Seattle Pacific University since 1922.
Graduates gather beneath the towering trees of Tiffany Loop on campus, where the ivy represents students' ties to the university and cutting it symbolizes their independence at graduation.
"It's all about saying you have been a part of our circle at SPU," said a speaker at the event, "and it's time to cut you loose and send you off with our blessing, love and encouragement ... to make the world a better place."
