Colleges changing policies on dissent
Community Colleges of Spokane and Spokane Falls Community College officials have agreed to change some of their policies after settling a lawsuit filed by a student who wanted to put up an anti-abortion display.
Community Colleges of Spokane and Spokane Falls Community College officials have agreed to change some of their policies after settling a lawsuit filed by a student who wanted to put up an anti-abortion display.
Spokane Falls Community College student Beth Sheeran sued in federal court in March, after the school denied her and her student group's request to erect the display and distribute fliers on campus to mark the 36th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision.
School administrators said such an event would be offensive and discriminatory and the group would need to include opposing viewpoints.
As part of last week's settlement, the school district will no longer require student groups to get school officials' approval before distributing printed materials or inviting outside speakers. The district is also clarifying its policies on what is deemed offensive or discriminatory.
