State audit says Seattle schools erred

A state audit has reported that Seattle Public Schools made errors in its financial statements for the 2007-08 school year, failed to report all money or assets lost, and hired four teachers for low-income schools that didn't meet federal requirements as "highly qualified teachers."

A state audit has reported that Seattle Public Schools made errors in its financial statements for the 2007-08 school year, failed to report all money or assets lost, and hired four teachers for low-income schools that didn't meet federal requirements as "highly qualified teachers."

District officials agreed with most of the findings, and said they have made corrections or plan to make corrections. Officials also said the issues didn't lead to significant misstatements in the district's financial statements or significant loss of funds.

Officials disputed the audit's contention that the district misclassified $8 million of administrative, maintenance and operations expenditures as capital costs, and that it incorrectly recorded about $50,000 in salaries in the capital-projects fund.
