UW ends logo deal over worker rights

The University of Washington has severed its licensing agreement with Russell Corp., maker of hats, T-shirts, sweat shirts and other items bearing the UW logo.

Seattle

The University of Washington has severed its licensing agreement with Russell Corp., maker of hats, T-shirts, sweat shirts and other items bearing the UW logo.

The move follows a report issued in November saying Russell had threatened workers at a factory in Honduras saying the plant would close if workers unionized. After union groups formed, the plant did close with Russell citing economic reasons.

The November report was written by The Worker Rights Consortium, a labor-rights-monitoring organization sponsored by 185 universities. In ending its agreement with Russell, the UW joins more than 10 other universities including Cornell, Duke and the University of Michigan.
