Most colleges accept scores from either.

Both exams measure your verbal and math abilities, but the ACT also tests you on the natural sciences, and it has a smaller math portion.

You can try taking practice tests of both to see which works better for you (see www.gocollege.com).

Beginning this spring, both tests will have a writing component. The SAT will require a timed essay in March, but the old version of the test will be offered until January. That means this year's junior class has the opportunity to try both. Some colleges will only accept results from the new exam, while others will take your single best section scores from either the current or new test.

ACT will begin offering a writing test in February — but it's optional. Some colleges will require the results, so be sure to check with the schools where you're applying before deciding whether to take it.
