The Times recommends

Sam Reed should be re-elected

Washington Secretary of State Sam Reed has earned a third term for his steady, nonpartisan work on behalf of this state's voters.

Secretary of State Sam Reed is an easy pick for re-election. He is methodical, steady and refreshingly nonpartisan in carrying out official duties of his office.

We heartily support him for a third term.

The extremely close 2004 gubernatorial election cast a huge spotlight on state elections operations. Republican Reed has been thorough in his approach to restoring confidence.

Reed ushered in a new statewide voter-registration system and scrubbed the rolls of voters who should not be allowed to vote. He has worked with county auditors to fortify their systems and ensure the sometimes daunting business of counting ballots becomes smoother and more reliable.
