Bain's greater gift

Other than parents, few adults impact young lives as much as teachers. May they all impart lessons like the one left by Mildred Bain

Other than parents, few adults impact young lives as much as teachers. May they all impart lessons like the one left by Mildred Bain.

A Seattle Public Schools teacher for 30 years, Bain died last year in an area nursing home. Then came the news that she has bequeathed $250,000 to the city's schools. The money is notable for its size but also its lack of restrictions.

The district's fundraising arm, the Alliance for Education, is well-positioned to make good on Bain's gift. In a departure from the past, the Alliance has restructured and is debt-free. Money really can flow into the classrooms.

The Educational Investment Taskforce is a new addition to the Alliance meant to ensure future education decisions are accompanied by well-developed guidelines and clear expectations.

Bain's gift is much appreciated. Equally valued is the symbolism behind it. She gave her life to the classroom and, in her passing, continues to give.
