In the Democratic primary for King County Council Position 6, there is a clear choice. The only problem is, Brad Larssen's name isn't on the ballot.
Pay attention, Democrats who live in the district that includes Kirkland, Mercer Island and most of Bellevue. If you want a genuine Democrat to face incumbent Republican Jane Hague in November, here's what you do: Write in Larssen's name and mark the bubble next to it.
Do not vote for Richard Pope, usually a Republican but always a present-on-a-ballot-somewhere political candidate. He has run unsuccessfully for everything from water commissioner to district court judge to state attorney general. He has been a GOP precinct committee official.
Pope filed in the Democratic primary at nearly the last minute, foreclosing the King County Democrats' option of nominating a candidate when no Democrat files.
The party's mistake was not making sure a Democrat filed. Now, party members are mobilizing to get out the word that Pope is not the party's candidate.
Larssen, who has lived in Kirkland for 27 years, has a long history of service to the Democratic Party and to union causes. He has not held a public office, but has been in leadership roles in both the party and Carpenters Local 1797.
For Democrats in the County Council's District 6, Larssen is your candidate. Write that down.
