School supplies — the tools of learning

Please support the school supply drive of The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy. Return students to class with the tools of learning.

How to help

Readers are invited to send a donation to: The School Supply Drive of The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy,

P.O. Box C-11025,

Seattle, WA 98111.

For donations via debit or credit card, e-mail pdelaney@seattletimes.com for details.

ONE of the magic effects a backpack full of school supplies has on a needy student is to replace the words dread and embarrassment with hope and dignity.

Such is the amazing power of new pens, pencils, notebooks and other tools of learning on the first day of class. Generous contributors make it happen through the school supply drive of The Seattle Times Fund for the Needy.

Our editorial-page campaign asks readers to help needy students not be noticed as a new school year begins. Slipping into a desk with all the supplies everyone else has is one of the great glories of being equipped to learn.

Students and parents facing tough times receive two important messages in those backpacks crammed with supplies: someone cares, and we are all in this together. Someone who did not need help last year, might be in line this summer. For others, it could be their opportunity to return the favor.

Reader contributions reach grateful families via three fine agencies with broad, deep connections throughout the region: Hopelink, the YWCA of Seattle-King County-Snohomish County, and the Seattle/King County Coalition on Homelessness.

They turn donations into bulk purchases of grade-appropriate school supplies and ensure they reach the right students in the neediest families.

The country will power its way out of economic troubles with educated minds. Help provide the tools.
