Gay marriage in Washington legal at last
Today, Gov. Chris Gregoire signed a bill to legalize gay marriage in Washington state.
In the Senate, where passage was less certain, several lawmakers did some soul-searching and gave the bill the boost it needed to pass and be sent on to the House where it easily passed.
Most people, including the governor, who switched previous positions said their change was a journey.
Indeed, The Seattle Times editorial board first endorsed civil unions in 2000, a start turnaround from its position four years earlier opposing gay marriage.
While others promise ballot measures to undo the landmark legislation, their path is not so sure.
All citizens, not just the governor, have been on a journey that trends toward embracing civil rights for gay and lesbian couples. .
