Remember the Alamo Bowl

Posted by Lance Dickie

Remember it? The 67-56 point frenzy will be hard to forget. The University of Washington Huskies lost to the Baylor University Bears in game that was all about offense, and, apparently, player safety. Viewers could easily conclude that tackling was banned by mutual agreement.

For much of the game, fans might have been confused which team had the Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback. UW's Keith Price was a marvel, whether he was running or passing. Baylor's quarterback, Robert Griffin III, likewise demonstrated the skills and produced the numbers that attracted attention, and brought him glory.

In a cost-cutting move by both teams, their defensive squads stayed home in Waco and Seattle. They were replaced by local players provided by the Sisters of Mercy and the Gandhi School for Non-Violence.

Bowl games do not get any more fun to watch. Despite the final score, the Huskies demonstrated they are back. If they are conscientious objectors to that assessment, they have a home on UW's defense.
