Cero claims victory for Mercer Island Council slot

Mike Cero is claiming victory in the close race for Mercer Island City Council Position 3.

Cero said he has received a congratulatory call from his opponent, Maureen Judge. King County Elections showed Cero leading by 222 votes as of Thursday.

This is the first time either candidate has sought elected office.

Bellevue

College gets $1M for recruitment

Bellevue Community College has received $1 million in grants from the National Science Foundation (NSF) for student recruitment.

The money will fund new internships for information-technology and science students and help create ways to recruit people into computer-science programs.

The grants go to the BCC National Workforce Center for Emerging Technologies.

Earlier this year, BCC received an unrelated $478,000 NSF grant for genomics research.

Eastside

4 projects share in history grants

The 4Culture board of directors has approved funds for four Eastside projects through the 2007 Heritage Special Projects program

The program supports projects that promote the preservation and appreciation of King County's historic resources and cultural traditions. Twenty-two projects were funded across the county with a total of $111,596.

The Eastside's four projects:

• $5,010 to the Duvall Historical Society to digitally record and archive its collection of historical photographs and to publish its third collection of vignettes as Wagon Wheel, Volume 3.

• $3,160 to the Issaquah History Museum to create a series of video "History Shorts" incorporating segments of 25 oral histories and photos from the museum's collection, with commentary from museum staff members and volunteers. It will be aired on the city of Issaquah's government television Channel 21.

• $3,372 to the Eastside Heritage Center to create six large historic display panels that will be used to promote heritage education and the center's work.

• $7,500 for the Kenmore Heritage Society to create panels that will chronicle Kenmore's history. They will be placed at a gazebo to be constructed at Logboom Park as part of a historical/interpretive center.

Northshore Schools

Firm to aid search for superintendent

The Northshore School Board this week approved hiring a search firm, Northwest Leadership Associates, to assist with the district's search for a new superintendent.

Lead consultant John Fotheringham, who brought Interim Superintendent Dolores Gibbons to the district, will work with the School Board to advertise the position, recruit and screen candidates, and arrange for staff and community involvement in the process.

During the past eight years, Northwest Leadership Associates has conducted more than 120 superintendent searches in Washington, Oregon and Idaho.

In recent years, the firm has helped find superintendents for the Marysville, Mukilteo, Puyallup and Renton school districts, among others.

Information about public involvement in the search will be available before the end of November.
