Soggy weather and a heavy commute led to the latest freeway addition to the state's population Thursday morning.
The birth came on Interstate 405 about 7 a.m. after Laurie Jolosky, of Bothell, headed for Evergreen Hospital in Kirkland but didn't make it.
She and her husband, David, started for the hospital about 5 a.m. Her contractions had begun and their doctor advised them it was time to go.
When they pulled onto I-405 in their 2004 Honda Element, however, they ran into a "sea of brake lights," said Trooper Jeff Merrill of the Washington State Patrol.
"We were almost to the exit to the hospital," Laurie said from her hospital bed later Thursday morning. "I was pushing, and my husband pulled over."
It was there, on the shoulder of I-405, where Gabriel Jolosky was born, weighing 7 pounds 12 ounces. Almost immediately an aid car arrived to complete the journey.
Gabriel joins a brother, Nathaniel, 3 ½.
Everyone was doing well Thursday, and an interstate highway population boom continues. Four babies were reported born in cars on Interstate 5 in King County from January to March this year.
