Former Washington State basketball player Aaron Haskins dies

Cougars forward from Mount Tahoma High played on two NCAA tournament teams.

Seattle Times staff reporter

Aaron Haskins, a member of two NCAA tournament basketball teams during a playing career at Washington State from 1979-1983 and a pastor at The City Church in Kirkland, died in his sleep early Monday morning. He was 49.

Mr. Haskins, a forward from Mount Tahoma High in Tacoma, played on both of George Raveling's 1980 and 1983 NCAA teams.

"I never had one minute's trouble from him in four years," Raveling said Tuesday. "Aaron knew what he wanted to do and what he had to do. He got better every year."

Raveling said he saw a lot of "raw potential" in Haskins as a prep player, and watched it culminate with him being named WSU's most valuable player in a game the Cougars lost to Virginia and Ralph Sampson in the second round of the 1983 NCAA tournament.

That was Raveling's final game at WSU. After a stop at Iowa, Raveling became USC's coach and recalls inviting Mr. Haskins to Los Angeles to play the national anthem on his saxophone before a game. Mr. Haskins had also played the anthem at his Senior Night at WSU in 1983.

"You could hear a pin drop in there," Raveling said of his performance at the USC game. "They gave him a tremendous ovation. I'm as proud of him as any kid I ever recruited."

A Haskins memorial Web site has been set up at
