Washington State suspends two football players following arrest

Charges hadn't been filed after Tyree Toomer and LeAndre Daniels were arrested on suspicion of several counts of theft and burglary

Seattle Times staff reporter

Two Washington State freshman football players, safeties Tyree Toomer and LeAndre Daniels, have been suspended from team activities following their arrest by WSU campus police in connection with the alleged theft of bicycles.

The two spent Tuesday night in Whitman County jail in Colfax and were released Wednesday on their own recognizance. They were arrested on suspicion of several counts of theft and burglary, but charges hadn't been filed as of Thursday afternoon.

WSU police lieutenant Steve Hansen said witnesses saw the two take a hacksaw from a house under remodel. The arrest came, Hanson said, after Toomer and Daniels allegedly used the hacksaw to take four bicycles from a storage area under Regents residence hall.

Toomer, from Bellflower, Calif., is listed as a No. 2 strong safety behind senior Xavier Hicks, who himself added recently to a string of off-field issues with a citation for driving with a suspended license. Daniels, of San Leandro, Calif., is a No. 3 free safety.

Both Toomer and Daniels were part of second-year coach Paul Wulff's first recruiting class.
