WSU vs. Portland State Cougars preview

At stake: A loss to Portland State would be devastating for the Cougars, and would seem to be a sign that an 0-13 season was possible. A win for Portland State would generate a buzz that could catapult Jerry Glanville's program to a new level in his second season.

What to expect: Coach Paul Wulff has shaken things up for WSU in hopes of generating different results. Look for quarterback Kevin Lopina to get the offense rolling in his second start with a finally healthy receiving corps. WSU is simply bigger than Portland State, but the Vikings have some quickness on offense that could cause problems for the WSU defense, which is yielding 475 yard per game (330 on the ground).

Notes: Of the 119 Division I-A teams, WSU ranks 113th in scoring offense (11 points per game) and 118th in scoring defense (50 points per game). ... Washington State athletic director Jim Sterk served as Portland State's athletic director from 1995 to 2000. WSU running-backs coach Steve Broussard was the Vikings' running-backs coach from 2003 to 2005. ... Wulff went 4-4 against Portland State while he was at Eastern Washington, losing the past two meetings. ... This is the first meeting between the Vikings and the Cougars. ... WSU is 13-0 against Division I-AA schools. ... Portland State is 2-23 against Division I-A schools, including 0-6 against the Pac-10.

Injuries: WSU — LB Kendrick Dunn (ankle) and LB Cory Evans (leg) are questionable. PSU — LB Jake Fetzer (back) is out; FS Jordan Brown (hamstring) is questionable.

Prediction: Hold your breath. Washington State 31, Portland State 28.
