WSU vs. Baylor preview

At stake: When Washington State athletic director Jim Sterk scheduled this game, it was supposed to be a win. Now the Cougars simply want to show they can be competitive against another Division I opponent. There's been a lot of speculation on the WSU campus this week that players mailed it in during the second half against Cal. If WSU doesn't show fight in this game — they showed none against Oklahoma State and Cal — then things could start to really get ugly.

What to expect: Gary Rogers? Kevin Lopina? Both? Paul Wulff either isn't sure or isn't saying, but neither is probably striking a whole lot of fear in the Baylor Bears. Although the WSU offense is finally getting healthy, it's hard to expect continuity when players look lost in the learning curve of the new system. Meanwhile Baylor freshman QB Robert Griffin is off to a hot start in his first two games, including an admirable season-opening performance versus Wake Forest that earned him the starting role.

Notes: The Cougars are 3 for 26 on third-down conversions this season. ... Baylor QB Griffin ranks ninth nationally with a 187.09 passing-efficiency rating. ... Griffin won the 400-meter hurdles at the 2008 NCAA Outdoor Championships. ... WSU LB Greg Trent needs one tackle to become the 17th WSU football player to record 250 tackles. ... This will be WSU's 39th game against a Big 12 opponent, and the Cougars have never hosted one in Pullman. ... Baylor leads the all-time series 3-2, with WSU winning the last matchup 17-15 at Qwest Field in 2006.

Injuries: WSU — Andrew Roxas (knee) is out; CB Alfonso Jackson (hip) is probable.

Prediction: The Cougars are flying into town hours before kickoff, and a game of musical quarterbacks is still unresolved. Baylor 31, Washington State 20.
