Pullman police have recommended that one second-degree assault charge and five fourth-degree assault charges be filed against Washington State defensive tackle Andy Roof.

Bill Druffel, senior deputy prosecutor in the Whitman County prosecutor's office, said Thursday that the decision on what charges will be filed will be made next week after a review of the evidence.

Roof didn't play last season because his three alcohol-related arrests resulted in suspension from the team. Roof returned to WSU for spring semester and was moved from offensive line to defensive line for spring drills.

He is accused of head-butting the doorman who denied him entrance to a party on April 25, causing facial fractures. He also is accused of fighting with five men who tried to remove him from the property.

A WSU spokesman said coach Paul Wulff "is still gathering facts" and hasn't made a decision concerning Roof's future on the team. Roof is a two-year letterman from East Valley High School outside Spokane and is one of the strongest players on the WSU team.

Note

• Free safety Xavier Hicks has begun serving a 45-day jail sentence in Whitman County after pleading guilty to misdemeanor theft and assault charges, according to The Associated Press, though it can be reduced to 30 days for good behavior. Hicks must also pay nearly $2,300 in fines and restitution.
