WSU safety Xavier Hicks pleads guilty to assault, theft

Washington State football safety Xavier Hicks has pleaded guilty to two gross misdemeanors after being charged with two felonies in February.

Hicks pleaded guilty to credit-card theft and must pay $1,648 in restitution and fines. He also pleaded guilty to attempted third-degree assault for putting the contact lenses of teammate-roommate Grady Maxwell in rubbing alcohol after a dispute over an unpaid cable TV bill. Maxwell never put the contacts in his eyes.

Hicks was sentenced to 45 days in jail before July 1 but isn't expected to begin serving the term until spring finals are completed. He also must pay $700 and court costs in the attempted-assault case.

Hicks was suspended at the time of his arrest but was back on the team for spring football.

Hicks, from Fullerton, Calif., will be a redshirt junior in the fall.
