WSU will lose eight football scholarships

Washington State will lose eight football scholarships, based on the annual release of the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate statistics.

Washington State's football program took a significant hit today with the annual release of the NCAA's Academic Progress Rate statistics. The Cougars were tagged with the loss of eight scholarships against the ceiling of 85, the result of heavy attrition in the five-year Bill Doba regime.

The APR measures eligibility, retention and graduation of each scholarship athlete. WSU was one of 17 Football Bowl Subdivision (formerly Division I-A) programs flagged, but its total of eight lost scholarships is the highest among teams in the six Bowl Championship Series conferences.

The only football-playing schools facing penalties as stringent are Akron (nine scholarships) and Idaho (eight).

WSU will be limited to 22 maximum scholarships next February and a total of 77 overall in the football program.

Doba resigned under pressure in December and was replaced by Paul Wulff, former coach at Eastern Washington.
