Mike Levenseller, an assistant on the Washington State football staff since 1992, will be retained on the new staff of coach Paul Wulff, according to sources. He joins six aides hired by Wulff, who was announced Tuesday as WSU's successor to Bill Doba.
The new staff has hit the road to recruit until the NCAA dead period begins Monday. The Cougars, with only three known commitments, are behind in recruiting.
Steve Broussard, running-backs coach on Doba's staff, earlier accepted an offer from Wulff to join the new staff. Five of Wulff's assistants from Eastern Washington University also are on board.
Levenseller was a highly successful receiver at WSU in the 1970s. He was offensive coordinator and receivers coach under Doba, and in recent years, tutored NFL players Devard Darling and Jason Hill. This year, Brandon Gibson was a first-team All-Pac-10 pick at receiver.
Five Cougars assistants under Doba were told by Wulff that they won't be hired. They are David Walkosky, cornerbacks; Marty Long, defensive ends; Mike Walker, defensive tackles; George Yarno, offensive line, and Leon Burtnett, safeties.
Walker said they got the bad news at a 10-minute meeting Wednesday.
"I was hoping he would talk to us individually," he said.
The fates of Timm Rosenbach, quarterbacks coach, and Greg Peterson, tight-ends coach and recruiting coordinator, are not known. Wulff's EWU recruiting coordinator, Rich Rasmussen, is among the coaches he has brought in.
Rosenbach may be interested in replacing Wulff, his former WSU teammate, as EWU's head coach.
