A memorial service for Tony Harris, the former Washington State and Garfield High School basketball star who died in Brazil this month, is scheduled for 11 a.m. Friday at the River of Life Fellowship Church in Kent.
Harris was found on Nov. 18, on what would have been his 37th birthday, with a shoelace around his neck. Harris had left the Seattle area on Oct. 31 to play basketball for the Universo team and last spoke with his wife, Lori, on Nov. 4, stating he feared for his life.
Brazilian authorities have said suicide is the most likely cause of death, but Harris' family members say they don't believe that.
Lori Harris is due to give birth to the couple's first child in December and said the baby remains healthy despite the emotional strain. Harris is also survived by his son, D'Nique Harris-Welch.
A fund has been set up to help the Harris family. Those interested can donate to the "Baby Harris/Friend of Lori Harris Fund" at any U.S. Bank branch. There is also a "Tony Harris Scholarship Fund" through the bank that will be given to an outstanding athlete for college.
