California edges WSU women in final minute

California secured second place in the Pac-12 by beating Washington State 60-55 on Sunday.

BERKELEY, Calif. — California secured second place in the Pac-12 by beating Washington State 60-55 on Sunday.

In a seesaw game with 12 lead changes and seven ties, the game was decided in the final minute with Layshia Clarendon scoring four of her 15 points.

Carly Noles, who scored 10 points for the Cougars (9-10, 3-4), hit a jumper to give WSU a 53-50 lead with 3:38 remaining. But the Golden Bears (15-5, 6-2) outscored the Cougars 10-2 the rest of the way.

Sage Romberg also scored 10 points for WSU.

No. 8 Maryland 72

Haley Peters scored a career-high 21 points as Duke beat Maryland for its 10th straight win.

Chelsea Gray had seven of her 17 points in the final three minutes to help the Blue Devils (16-2, 7-0) remain the Atlantic Coast Conference's only unbeaten team in league play.

Alyssa Thomas matched her career high with 26 points and Tianna Hawkins added 17 for the Terrapins (18-2, 5-2). They whittled a 12-point deficit to three on Lynetta Kizer's jumper with 3 ½ minutes left.

Gray followed with a three-pointer 30 seconds later to make it 74-68, and her jumper with 1:04 remaining pushed the lead back to six and made it a two-possession game the rest of the way.

Duke then went 4 of 4 from the free-throw line in the final minute to seal its 34th straight win at Cameron Indoor Stadium.

Other Pac-12 women

Colorado 56, at Arizona 54

Brittany Wilson scored 15 points as the Buffaloes edged the Wildcats.

Jen Reese had 12 points and seven rebounds for Colorado (14-4, 3-4) and Julie Seabrook contributed 10 points.

Reiko Thomas had 16 points and nine rebounds for Arizona (13-6, 2-5). Alex Rohde scored 10 points and Davellyn Whyte had eight points and 11 rebounds.

• The Penn State men's basketball team learned of former football coach Joe Paterno's death on their way to the game against No. 11 Indiana in Bloomington. Indiana held a moment of silence just before tipoff and went on to win the game 73-54.
