Balanced UCLA tightens its grip on 2nd | Pac-10 women's basketball

UCLA had three players with 13 points and solidified its hold on second place in the conference with a 74-56 victory over USC on Saturday.

LOS ANGELES — UCLA had three players with 13 points and solidified its hold on second place in the conference with a 74-56 victory over USC on Saturday.

Markel Walker, Jasmine Dixon and Erica Tukiainen had 13 points apiece and Darxia Morris added 10 for the Bruins (16-7 overall, 9-3 Pac-10), who have won six of their last seven.

Stanford, ranked No. 2 in the nation, leads the conference at 12-0.

Ashley Corral of Vancouver, Wash., Kari LaPlante and Jacki Gemelos scored 11 points each for the Women of Troy (13-10, 7-5), who lost their fourth consecutive conference game.

USC, Oregon and California are tied for third in the Pac-10 at 7-5.

UCLA outshot USC 44.8 percent to 35.4 and outrebounded the Women of Troy 44-29, gaining revenge for a 70-63 loss to USC last month.

UCLA led 37-18 at halftime, but USC cut its lead to 37-24 early in second half. UCLA came back with an 8-0 run to make it 45-24 on Tukiainen's jumper with 15:44 to go. The lead topped out at 27 points.

At Oregon 82, Arizona St. 81

Taylor Lilley scored 26 points and Micaela Cocks added 20 as the Ducks (16-8, 7-5) defeated the Sun Devils (15-9, 7-6).

Oregon, guided by first-season coach Paul Westhead, has won four in a row.

Last season, the Ducks had a total of nine victories.

Oregon snapped a 10-game losing streak to the Sun Devils, beating Arizona State for the first time since the 2004-05 season.

Cocks made two free throws with 5.7 seconds left to give Oregon an 82-78 lead and Arizona State's Deja Mann closed out scoring with a last-second three-pointer.

Reiko Thomas and Davellyn Whyte scored 14 points each for the Wildcats (12-11, 6-7), who overcame a nine-point deficit in the second half.

Talisa Rhea scored 16 points and El Sara Greer contributed 14 points and 15 rebounds for the Beavers (9-14, 1-11), who have lost 12 in a row.
