UCLA beats Cal 44-32 | Pac-10 women's basketball
Darxia Morris scored all seven of her points after halftime, Doreena Campbell had three free throws and a key layup in the final 2 ½ minutes and UCLA overcame a horrendous start to beat California 44-32 on Saturday.
BERKELEY, Calif. — Darxia Morris scored all seven of her points after halftime, Doreena Campbell had three free throws and a key layup in the final 2 ½ minutes and UCLA overcame a horrendous start to beat California 44-32 on Saturday.
The teams combined for just 22 points in the first half, the fewest in a half since 2004. They also came close to matching the NCAA record for fewest combined points for a game before a late scoring surge by the Bruins.
Morris was shut out in the first half and didn't score until making a short jumper with 13:11 remaining. She later sank a three-pointer as part of a 9-2 run then banked in a 3-foot jumper to make it 33-24.
Campbell and Nina Earl finished with nine points apiece for UCLA (15-7, 8-3 Pac-10).
Alexis Gray-Lawson had 11 points while Rachelle Frederico added 10 for Cal (12-10, 6-5), which fell into fifth place in the Pac-10.
The Bruins, who had won four straight before losing to No. 2 Stanford 74-53 on Thursday, shot a season-low 27.5 percent from the floor (14 of 51) and had 18 turnovers but won at Haas Pavilion for the first time since 2005 behind a stingy defense that held Cal scoreless for the final 11 minutes of the first half.
UCLA limited the Bears to 21.7 percent shooting and outrebounded Cal 42-33, winning despite not having a single player in double figures.
"Offensively, I felt we were scared," Cal coach Joanne Boyle said. "We didn't want the responsibility. We had players hide. We had players not show up."

"Our defense really wrecked havoc," WSU coach June Daugherty said. "We chipped away at the lead, we stayed poised, and we finally broke through for the win."
Washington State had not beaten the Sun Devils (14-8, 6-5) since Feb. 28, 2004, in Pullman, Wash. The Cougars won in Tempe for the first time since 1997.
Kiki Moore overcame her 13 turnovers to add 16 points, five assists and four steals for Washington State.
Kayli Murphy had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Arizona State.
Cook and Jazmine Perkins made three-pointers to give Washington State the lead for good at 48-44 with 7:15 remaining. The teams combined for 39 turnovers in the first half.
At Oregon 82, Oregon St. 62
Taylor Lilley scored 23 and Oregon never trailed in a win against Oregon State (9-12, 1-9).
Micaela Cocks scored 18 for the Ducks (14-8, 5-5) and Nia Jackson of Chief Sealth scored 14.
Jackson had to be carried off the court by two teammates with 3:39 left in the game after a head-to-head collision with the Beavers' Talisa Rhea left her dazed on the floor and bleeding from a cut inside her mouth. She received stitches and was being tested for a concussion after the game.
