College Hoops | No. 5 Kentucky puts on a dunk show

Minutes after putting up 24 points and 10 rebounds in the fifth-ranked Wildcats' 94-57 victory over UNC Asheville on Monday night, Kentucky freshman center DeMarcus Cousins was asked about No. 10 North Carolina. The Tar Heels visit Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., on Saturday. "I'm not impressed," Cousins said of the defending national champions.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. — Kentucky freshman center DeMarcus Cousins' career is seven games old.

He is already a veteran when it comes to gamesmanship.

Minutes after putting up 24 points and 10 rebounds in the fifth-ranked Wildcats' 94-57 victory over UNC Asheville on Monday night, Cousins was asked about No. 10 North Carolina. The Tar Heels visit Rupp Arena in Lexington, Ky., on Saturday.

"I'm not impressed," Cousins said of the defending national champions.

Considering the way Kentucky (7-0) roared past the overmatched Bulldogs (0-6), Cousins could be forgiven for feeling a little giddy.

With guard John Wall scoring 12 points and handing out a school freshman-record 14 assists, Kentucky matched its best start since 2004. Wall, who made one turnover, threw five consecutive alley-oop passes that led to dunks during a 29-6 run.

"A point guard wants to keep everybody happy," Wall said. "I was just getting the ball in to the big men."

Notes

• The NCAA Committee on Infractions wants its punishment of Memphis upheld because schools need to be punished when they use ineligible players. That is according to the NCAA's 30-page response to Memphis' appeal of penalties, including the vacated 38 victories from the 2007-08 season.

The NCAA ruled a Memphis player believed to be Derrick Rose — a Chicago Bulls guard who was the first player taken in last year's NBA draft — was ineligible.

Al Shaw, former coach at Williams College in Williamstown, Mass., died Sunday in North Adams, Mass. He was 102. Shaw was 302-171 in 24 seasons, ending in 1973.
