Men's College Hoops | President Obama sees Oregon State win

Oregon State gave the first fan something to cheer about.

WASHINGTON — Oregon State gave the first fan something to cheer about.

Seth Tarver scored 18 points and the Beavers defeated George Washington 64-57 Saturday, with President Obama and his family watching from courtside as part of the crowd of 2,401 at the Smith Center.

Brother-in-law Craig Robinson is the Oregon State coach, and the president brought along first lady Michelle Obama, daughters Malia and Sasha, and mother-in-law Marian Robinson.

The coach said he enjoyed having his family at the game.

"He's a huge basketball fan," Robinson said of the president. "He pays close attention and he's always followed us."

Oregon State (2-3) led 14-0 before George Washington (4-1) realized the game had started.

Obama received a basketball signed by George Washington players and coaches, along with a jersey and shorts. Coach Karl Hobbs thanked Obama and his family for attending the game.

"Students, this is why you come to GW," Hobbs said.

Lasan Kromah scored 21 points to lead George Washington, which trailed 59-57 with 33 seconds left.

Oregon State made five of six free throws down the stretch and George Washington missed two three-point attempts.

Obama arrived about 10 minutes before tipoff. As he walked into the arena, he and his family received a standing ovation. Obama shook hands with several GW students seated in the Colonial Army section before taking his seat in the front row behind the Oregon State bench.

The president sat next to his mother-in-law, Marian Robinson. Michelle Obama was seated next to her mother. Daughters Sasha, Malia and their cousin, Leslie Robinson, Craig Robinson's daughter, filled out the row.

The atmosphere wasn't quite as electric as the last time a president visited Smith Center, when Bill Clinton brought daughter Chelsea to watch GW knock off top-ranked Massachusetts in 1995.

But as he sat munching on popcorn in the first half, Obama had to like what he saw from Robinson's team.
