College Basketball | Ex-Indiana coach Bob Knight gets $75K in lawsuit settlement

Private donors are giving $75,000 to Bob Knight to settle a lawsuit he filed against Indiana University, claiming the school didn't properly defend him when he was sued by a former assistant coach.

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. — Private donors are giving $75,000 to Bob Knight to settle a lawsuit he filed against Indiana University, claiming the school didn't properly defend him when he was sued by a former assistant coach.

A letter signed by lawyers for the university and Knight says the payment offer from anonymous donors would reimburse the former coach for expenses from the lawsuit by former Knight assistant Ron Felling.

Knight settled with Felling in 2002 by paying him $25,000 and admitting that in 1999 he shoved Felling in anger after overhearing him criticize Knight's coaching and behavior.

Indiana fired Knight in 2000.

Knight, 68, retired as Texas Tech's coach last year. He won a record 902 Division I games.

Notes

• Kentucky freshman John Wall practiced with teammates in front of students, a day after a report the highly touted guard might not be eligible to play.

Southeastern Conference commissioner Mike Slive told ESPN.com the NCAA's agents and amateurism group is looking into the eligibility of Wall. ESPN.com reported Wall's AAU coach, Brian Clifton, was a certified agent from 2007-2008. Under NCAA rules, that would be considered accepting illegal benefits.

• When North Carolina coach Roy Williams was 14, he pulled his drunk and angry father off his mother, shoved a bottle under his chin, and threatened to kill him if he didn't leave.

"My dad never, ever came back to our house again," the 59-year-old Williams writes in his autobiography "Hard Work: A Life On and Off the Court" that will be on sale Nov. 3.

The book, written with former Sports Illustrated reporter Tim Crothers, details Williams' journey from his rough early years in the North Carolina mountains to two-time NCAA-title-winning coach. Crothers interviewed Williams for a total of 64 hours over a two-month span at the coach's home and office.
