Billing itself as "The City's Team," the Seattle University men's basketball team has scheduled all 13 of home games at KeyArena this season and has reached a radio deal to broadcast all its games on ESPN 710 Radio, with Dave Grosby doing play-by-play.
The debut of the Redhawks' new home court is Nov. 19 against Fresno State. The game will be attended by legend Elgin Baylor, who'll have the court named in his honor.
Seattle U. is in the process of becoming a Division I program again, and will be eligible to compete in the NCAA tournament in 2013.
"It brings life to an area that has been kind of down since the Sonics left," said first-year coach Cameron Dollar of playing at KeyArena. "We're the city's team. We have a whole host of people, alumni and interested onlookers that remember how it used to be, and we give them a way to come back and enjoy the old memories of yesteryear. But also be a part of building and competing."
The Redhawks secured a radio deal with Seattle's new ESPN affiliate, starting all of their matchups at 7:10 p.m. to help promotion. Grosby, the well-known KJR announcer, purchased the broadcast rights with Joe Abel, former KIRO radio general manager. Grosby will continue to co-host the "Groz with Gas" show with Mike Gastineau on KJR (950 AM).
"They have a chance to be a really big deal," Grosby said of the Redhawks.
Bill Hogan, Seattle U.'s athletic director, said there's also a verbal agreement with FSN to televise six games. Some matchups at KeyArena will be doubleheaders with the women's program.
Using the same configuration as the WNBA's Storm, season tickets for the men at the 9,686-seat arena range from $40 to $150, with courtside prices $500. Single-game tickets sell for $5 to $20.
