College Football | Utah teams probably can forget about BCS

SALT LAKE CITY — Bowl Championship Series hopes in the Beehive State have been busted a few weeks into the season.

Utah lost at Oregon 31-24 Saturday, ending the Utes' winning streak at 16 games. A few hours later, Brigham Young was blitzed 54-28 by visiting Florida State.

Mountain West rivals Utah and BYU can concentrate on winning a conference title, as the big-money bowl games are likely out of reach for them this season.

Brigham Young tumbled from No. 7 in the Associated Press media poll to 19th after its 18-game home winning streak was snapped by the Seminoles.

"I've tried not to acknowledge what was at stake, but it's hard not to with all the attention," Cougars coach Bronco Mendenhall said.

Florida State, which had struggled to run the ball in the first two games of the season, piled up 313 yards on the ground.

"They were able to run the ball from the beginning of the night to the end of the night and that was the difference in the game," Mendenhall said. "Their running game prevented us from getting the offense the ball."

Utah, the lone unbeaten team at the highest level of college football last season, dropped from 18th to out of the Top 25. The Utes hadn't lost since a November 2007 setback against BYU.

"We're going through some growing pains right now as a team," Utah coach Kyle Whittingham said. "That's evident. We're figuring out who we are in a lot of ways."

Notes

• Notre Dame will likely be without wide receiver Michael Floyd for the rest of the regular season and quarterback Jimmy Clausen might not be 100 percent because of an injured right foot when the Fighting Irish play at Purdue on Saturday.

Floyd underwent surgery Sunday for a broken collarbone. Coach Charlie Weis said he hasn't been told how long Floyd will be out, but he expects to be without him the rest of the way. Floyd might be available for a bowl "if we chose to go in that direction," Weis said.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound sophomore went into the Michigan State game second in the nation in receiving yards at 160 yards a game. He was injured in Notre Dame's 33-30 victory falling to the ground trying to make a touchdown catch.

• South Florida quarterback Matt Grothe, a senior, will miss the rest of the season with a torn ligament in his left knee. He was hurt in the second quarter of Saturday's 59-0 victory over Charleston Southern.

Grothe had started 41 consecutive games for the Bulls and is the Big East Conference career leader in total offense with 10,875 yards. Redshirt freshman B.J. Daniels will replace Grothe when South Florida plays at No. 18 Florida State on Saturday.
