BOSTON — The man who fired Jeff Jagodzinski for interviewing with the New York Jets called Wednesday the hardest day in his 12 years as Boston College's athletic director.

Athletic director Gene DeFilippo seemed to choke back tears as he discussed his decision to fire Jagodzinski over "a difference of vision for the future."

Jagodzinski wasn't talking.

He went through with his interview for the Jets' head-coaching job Tuesday even though DeFilippo told him three days earlier he would be fired if he did.

Jagodzinski, 45, took Boston College to the Atlantic Coast Conference title game twice, losing both to Virginia Tech. The Eagles were ranked as high as No. 2 in 2007 and were 20-8 under Jagodzinski.

Notes

• Four players announced they are leaving school early to enter the NFL draft: Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford, Georgia running back Knowshon Moreno, Florida State defensive end Everette Brown and Maryland wide receiver Darrius Heyward-Bey.

• Penn State police are looking for Joe Paterno's bottle-thick glasses — the bronzed ones that were perched on the statue of the iconic coach that stands outside Beaver Stadium. Vandals apparently cut the glasses off just above the base of the ears of the 7-foot sculpture.

• Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo was given a contract extension, a reward for defeating Army and taking the Midshipmen to a bowl game in his first full season as coach at the academy.

• Jacksonville Jaguars defensive assistant Tom Williams was introduced as the coach at Yale, making him the first African-American to hold the job and only the second black coach in the Ivy League.

• Louisville quarterback Matt Simms will transfer from the program.
