Todd Doxey, a University of Oregon football player, died Sunday after reportedly jumping off a bridge into the McKenzie River, according to the Web sites for The Register-Guard and KEZI-TV in Eugene.

Doxey, a 19-year-old who was born in San Diego, was a redshirt freshman whose position on the team was rover.

According to The Register-Guard Web site, Doxey began swimming across the current toward a boat ramp. Witnesses said Doxey began to struggle and had difficulty keeping his head above water, according to the Lane County Sheriff's Office.

A fisherman pulled Doxey from the water. Doxey died at a hospital, KEZI reported.
