EAGLE, Idaho — Adam Hadwin of Abbotsford, B.C., carded an opening-round 7-under par 63 to lead after the first round of stroke-play qualifying in the 107th Pacific Northwest Men's Amateur Championship.
Hadwin, who plays collegiately for Louisville, made no mistakes on the Banbury Golf Club course, finishing with seven birdies and 11 pars.
Jarin Todd of Woodinville carded a 64 to stand one shot off the lead. Todd was the 2007-08 NCAA Division II player of the year at Sonoma State. Renton's Logan Toskey was tied for third after a 65.
In the women's event in Richland, Anya Tanpinco shot a 3-under-par 69, good for a two-shot lead over defending champion Kim Shin of Mill Creek.
Charisse Spada of Portland led the Mid-Amateur field with an even-par round of 72 on the Meadow Springs Country Club course, and leads Leslie Folsom of Seattle by three strokes.
Ex-Cougars named
to all-star team
Former Washington State football players Drew Dunning and Lamont Thompson have been named to the 75th anniversary All-Sun Bowl team.
Dunning, a native of Issaquah, tied the Sun Bowl record for most points in a single game by a kicker with 15 in 2001, going 4 of 4 on field goal attempts and 3 of 3 on point-after attempts, earning the John Folmer Most Valuable Special Teams Player Award. Thompson, a defensive back from El Cerrito, Calif., was the 2001 C.M. Hendricks Most Valuable Player after recording 10 tackles, two interceptions and a Sun Bowl-record five pass breakups.
The Sun Bowl is the nation's second-oldest bowl game.

• Blaise Didier (Washington), Katelin Snyder (Washington), and Jamie Redman (Spokane) have been named to the under-23 national team that will represent the United States at the 2008 FISA World Rowing Under 23 Championships, July 17-20 in Brandenburg, Germany:

In addition, Washington's Mike Callahan and Joshua Adam of the Pocock Elite Sculling Team have been named to the U.S. coaching staff.
• Cara Linnekohl (Redmond), Shannon Stief (Mulkiteo) and Rob Munn (Redmond) have been named to the national team that will represent the U.S. at the 2008 FISA World Rowing Senior and Junior Championships scheduled, July 22-27 in Linz-Ottensheim, Austria.
