AUBURN — A full field of 10 is entered in today's $50,000 King County Handicap at Emerald Downs, the first distance event of the season for fillies and mares.

Shampoo (12-6-1-2) and Beaulena (29-6-8-7) are the probable favorites in the 1-mile race.

Washington-bred She's All Silk is back for another run at the win. In last year's King County, she led by 6 lengths on the final turn but tired late and wound up second.

The 5-year-old has lost seven straight races and finished out of the money in all three starts this year. Trainer H.R. Mullens is hoping the longer distance and the lack of much pace competition could do the trick.

"She's coming up to the race well and I think she'll get the mile, if she can relax," he said.

Notes

• Defending champion Richard Lee holds a two-shot lead after two rounds of the Seattle Amateur Championship. Lee shot a 70 during a weather-interrupted second round Thursday at West Seattle Golf Club.

• Two Seattle Thunderbirds have signed three-year entry level contracts with NHL teams.

Defenseman Scott Jackson inked a deal with the Tampa Bay Lightning. Jackson, originally drafted 37th overall in 2005 by the St. Louis Blues, had six goals and 17 assists last season for Seattle.

Left wing Greg Scott signed with the Toronto Maple Leafs. Scott, second on the T-birds in scoring last season with 38 goals and 37 assists, will attend Toronto's training camp this fall with a shot at making the team. He also could return to Seattle as one of its three 20-year-old players.

• Washington State WR Brandon Gibson was named to the Maxwell Award Watch List, awarded annually to the nation's most outstanding college football player.

Karly Wade has been named head of the men's and women's cross country program at Bellevue Community College.

• The American Basketball Association announced the addition of a Washington expansion team for the 2008-09 season. The Raptors will be based in Chehalis.
