Nick Haughian struck out 11 in a complete-game victory, and Kyle Conley hit a pair of two-run homers as the Washington baseball team defeated Washington State 5-1 Sunday at Husky Ballpark.
The victory gave the Huskies (31-17, 10-8 Pac-10) a 2-1 win in the Apple Cup series and, coupled with a California loss to Stanford, put them back in third place in the conference.
Haughian (6-4) held the Cougars (27-22, 6-12) to one run on just four hits. He now has 99 strikeouts this year, one short of becoming just the fourth Huskies pitcher in history to record 100 strikeouts in a season.
Conley hit two-run homers in the first and third innings. He also singled and was walked intentionally to finish 3 for 3 with four runs batted in. Conley's two homers were his 15th and 16th of the season and his 11th and 12th in Washington's last 19 games.
UW softball
gets NCAA bid
The Washington softball team was selected for its 15th straight postseason appearance and faces Texas in the first round at 3 p.m. Friday.
The Huskies (28-23-1, 7-14 Pac-10) and Longhorns (28-21-2, 9-9 Big 12) will be joined by Delaware State and host and eighth-seeded Houston in their double-elimination regional, played Friday through Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium.
"We are happy to have been selected to the NCAA tournament," said Huskies coach Heather Tarr.
"We are coming out of the Pac-10 season with some momentum and look forward to traveling to Houston for a great tournament venue."
