College Basketball | Dawkins to guide Stanford program

SAN FRANCISCO — Johnny Dawkins, a longtime associate head coach at Duke under Hall of Famer Mike Krzyzewski, has been hired as Stanford's coach.

Dawkins, 44, will be formally introduced in a news conference Monday. He replaces Trent Johnson, the Pac-10 coach of the year, who left to coach Louisiana State. Johnson is a former Washington assistant.

"We are thrilled to welcome Johnny and his family to Stanford," athletic director Bob Bowlsby said in a statement. "His credentials as a player, combined with his coaching experience gained mentoring under a Hall of Fame coach at a university such as Duke, made him a perfect fit for Stanford. The philosophies of the two programs, both on the court and in the classroom, are very similar. I am confident Johnny's leadership skills, coaching ability and commitment to attract top-flight student-athletes will be a driving force in continuing Stanford's tradition of basketball excellence."

Dawkins has no experience as a head coach. He was an All-American guard at Duke and played in nine NBA seasons.

"In my 28 years at Duke, no one did more to build our program as a player, coach or a person than Johnny Dawkins," Krzyzewski said in a statement issued by Duke.

Notes

• UCLA point guard Darren Collison announced he will return for his senior season. Collison had been projected as a probable first-round pick in the NBA draft, but chose not to follow teammates Kevin Love, Russell Westbrook and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute, who declared themselves eligible for the draft earlier this month.

Because Love, Westbrook and Mbah a Moute have not hired agents, they have the option to return to UCLA.

• Danny Green, North Carolina's sixth man, declared for the NBA draft but will not hire an agent.

The forward announced his decision one day after Tyler Hansbrough, The Associated Press player of the year, said he would return for his senior season but teammates Ty Lawson and Wayne Ellington indicated they would enter the draft pool without agents.

• Memphis coach John Calipari signed a contract extension through the 2012-13 season that includes an annual raise of $500,000 and a $5 million bonus if he stays through the end of the contract.

Calipari's new contract will pay him $2.35 million per year.
