The unranked Oregon State women's varsity eight upset eighth-ranked Washington on Saturday in their annual dual regatta.

The loss on the UW home course was the second straight for the rebuilding Huskies, who started the season with a shocking victory at the San Diego Crew Classic, then lost at home last week to Washington State.

The loss to the Cougars varsity was the third consecutive defeat in the annual Apple Cup Regatta. There were two new rowers in the UW varsity boat this week.

The unranked Beavers took the lead in the 2,000-meter race after 1,500 meters and finished in 6 minutes, 38.3 seconds. The Huskies were two seats behind when they crossed the finish line in Montlake Cut in 6:39.9.

The Huskies won the other four races on the program for women and the UW men swept their four races.

The top-ranked UW men's varsity covered the course in 5:46.1. The Beavers finished in 5:47.97.

More rowing

The Western Washington women won six of nine races to claim a fourth consecutive Northwest Collegiate Rowing Conference Championship on Vancouver Lake. The Vikings' varsity eight completed the 2,000-meter course in 7:46.10. Western's varsity four won a weather-shortened 1,000-meter race in 4:06.10.

• The Gonzaga women finished first in the varsity four (7:31.00) and second in the varsity eight (6:35.76) in the 2,000-meter afternoon races at the Charles River Challenge in Boston.

Gonzaga was second in the varsity eight and varsity four morning races.

Softball

Two UCLA pitchers combined to hold No. 22 Washington to just two hits as the fifth-ranked Bruins picked up a 4-0 win at Husky Softball Stadium. Morgan Stuart and Bailey Stenson had the hits for the Huskies (25-16-1, 4-7 Pac-10).

• Pitcher Sarah McEnroe (Woodinville) allowed just three hits in six innings as host Western Washington defeated Northwest Nazarene 9-1 in a game that was called after six innings because of an eight-run mercy rule.

Baseball

Doug Cherry broke a tie at 2 with a pinch-hit RBI single in the eighth inning as Washington broke a four-game losing streak with a 7-4 win at No. 8 California. With the victory, the Huskies (24-13, 4-4 Pac-10) evened the series with California (25-10-2, 6-5) at one win apiece.

• Brad Glenn's two-run home run in the bottom of the ninth lifted host Arizona to a 6-5 victory over Washington State (19-17, 3-8 Pac-10).

• Gonzaga had seven runs in the third inning to defeat visiting Portland 9-8. AJ Proszek (2-3) started for Gonzaga (22-16, 4-6 West Coast Conference).

• Central Washington's Frank Donangelo smashed a game-winning three-run homer in the bottom of the ninth inning to lift the Wildcats (20-14) over the visiting Dixie State Rebels 10-7 in the first game of a would-be doubleheader in Ellensburg. The second game was canceled because of weather.

Golf

The Washington State men finished tied with Brigham Young for second at the Ping Cougar Classic in Provo, Utah. The Cougars carded a three-round total of 6-under 858.

• The Western Washington women are second after first-day play at the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference tournament at the Silver City (N.M.) Golf Course.

• The Washington men are in 12th after the first day of the U.S. Intercollegiate at Stanford.

Tennis

Senior Andy Kuharszky went out with a win in his final home match, helping the No. 32 Washington men to a 7-0 sweep of Oregon at Nordstrom Tennis Center. The Huskies (14-9, 2-5 Pac-10) snapped a three-match slide.

Allison Rainey won her first match since early February, but the No. 34 Washington women (12-9, 2-6) lost 4-3 to Washington State (16-9, 2-6) in Pullman.

• The seventh-seeded Gonzaga men dropped a 4-0 decision to sixth-seeded University of Portland at the West Coast Conference Championships in Santa Clara, Calif.

• The Gonzaga women fell 4-0 to Loyola Marymount at the West Coast Conference Championships in Moraga, Calif.

Track and field
