SPOKANE — Ryan Wiegand homered and went 3 for 4 as Gonzaga finished a two-game sweep of Washington with an 8-4 nonconference baseball victory on Tuesday.
Sophomore Jeremy Stumetz (3-0) pitched six innings to win his first start this season. UW ace Nick Haughian (4-3), who had struck out 29 in his previous 17 innings, lasted only three innings.
Mark Castellitto and Wiegand hit two-run homers in the fourth inning for the Bulldogs (20-16), who won 15-3 Monday. Castellitto was 5 for 7 with five RBI in the two games.
Brett Wilcox hit a solo homer for the Huskies (23-12).
Former Husky dies
Walter B. Harrison, 87, a former Husky football captain who became an avid fan and didn't miss a home kickoff for 72 years other than an interruption for World War II, has died. He died on April 6 of complications from a fall.
Harrison, a graduate of Roosevelt High School, lettered at UW from 1940-42 and was captain in 1942. He was also an All-Coast selection as a senior center that season.
He was drafted in the seventh round by the Philadelphia Eagles. Instead of pro football, he served in the Marine Corps in the Pacific during World War II on Guam and Tinian, according to his grandson, Nathaniel Harrison.
After the war, he worked primarily as a car dealer while attending every Husky home game through the 2007 Apple Cup.
"He was a Husky through and through," said his grandson.
Harrison was inducted into the Husky Hall of Fame in 1999.
