Who's hot, who's not

Jason Thompson, C, Rider

The 6-11 center, projected as a first-round NBA draft pick on some Web sites, is having a monster season for the New Jersey school, averaging 20.1 points and 12.1 rebounds. His latest effort was a 26-point, 24-rebound gem against Siena.

Cal's 3-point defense

The unpredictable Bears allowed the Oregon schools to shoot 29 of 62 from distance last week, including a record 18 successes by the Ducks.

Triple shot

Three takes on college-basketball happenings:

Maybe planned succession is the way to go in hiring coaches. Two of the season's biggest stories are Drake, where Tom Davis handed off to his son Keno, and Purdue, where Matt Painter was installed as coach-to-be a year before Gene Keady retired.

John Brady's midseason firing at LSU may set a fresh standard of heat on coaches. Two years ago, the Tigers were in the Final Four. After going 17-15 last year and 8-13 through last week, he was toast.

Washington's victory over UCLA on Sunday was inspired and impressive, but it's impossible not to wonder: Where was this effort six weeks ago?
