Kent native Rodney Stuckey, a former Eastern Washington University All-American basketball player and current Detroit Pistons backup point guard, has been selected as the Inland Northwest Amateur Male Athlete of the Year for the 2007 athletic sports season.
Stuckey is just the second EWU athlete to win the honor since it was first awarded in 1948. The award is presented by the Inland Northwest Sportswriters and Broadcasters organization.
Stuckey joins a prestigious list of winners that include Mark Rypien, John Stockton, John Friesz, Steve Emtman, Dan O'Brien, Drew Bledsoe and Dan Dickau.
Stuckey was an All-American at Eastern — both athletically and academically — after averaging 24 points per game in each of his two seasons. He helped the Eagles win 30 games in two seasons and had a 3.34 grade-point average.
A 2004 graduate of Kentwood High School, Stuckey was a non-qualifier out of high school and had to sit out the 2004-05 season while he concentrated on his schoolwork.
Stuckey was the 15th overall draft pick in last year's NBA draft.
College basketball
Gonzaga junior guard Jeremy Pargo earned his second West Coast Conference Player of the Week honor this season after leading the Bulldogs to home wins over Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.
Pargo averaged 14 points, 9 assists and 4.5 steals in the two games.
High schools
Mount Rainier's Ryan Prentice, this school year's Class 3A cross-country state champion, has signed to run for Oklahoma State. Prentice, a senior, received a full-ride scholarship for cross country and track.
• Kentlake senior Brandee Marone has signed a national letter of intent to play women's soccer at Montana.

Notes
• Scott White of Snohomish placed sixth at the 2008 Race to the Sky dog sled race Tuesday in Lincoln, Mont.
The Race to the Sky is usually 350 miles long, but a winter storm that buried trail markers and raised avalanche concerns forced some changes that shortened the course this year by nearly 60 miles.
• Arlington's Randall Opel won first place and $10,000 in the Roche Harbor Salmon Classic Invitational derby this past Saturday. Opel caught a salmon weighing 19.14 pounds.
