NW Briefs | Redhawks softball takes two from Saints

LACEY — The 18th-ranked Seattle University softball team continued its winning ways, batting around the order in one inning of each game and using solid pitching to sweep Saint Martin's, 13-4 and 13-1, in a nonconference doubleheader Sunday afternoon.

After falling behind 3-0 in the first game, Seattle University fired back with a four-run fourth inning, featuring a bases-clearing double by Katie Petersen.

The Redhawks (6-0) broke the game open in the fifth, going ahead 11-3. Sandra Hernandez got things started with the team's first home run of the season, a three-run shot to left field.

Right-hander Erin Martin earned her third victory of the season, striking out eight Saint Martin's batters in the game.

Seattle U. jumped to an early lead in Game 2, scoring four in the second inning. In the fourth, a combination of six Redhawks hits and three Saints errors led to eight runs for Seattle U. The big hit was a two-run single from Kaha Weir.

Right-hander Kelsey Reynolds allowed one run on two hits and two walks for her third victory of the year.

Huskies end in tie

LAS VEGAS — The Washington softball team tied 4-4 with UNLV at the Sportco Spring Kick-off Classic in a game halted in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Huskies and Rebels agreed to a prearranged stop time out of concern for Washington's travel plans.

Lauren Greer and Caitlin Noble both went 2 for 3 for Washington (2-1-1). Noble pitched five innings, giving up five hits, four walks and three earned runs while striking out eight.

Baseball

Central Washington managed just six hits in 16 innings, and the Wildcats (0-4) dropped a doubleheader to Cal State Stanislaus, 3-1 and 4-3, in Turlock, Calif.
