The University of Washington men's golf team, ranked 31st nationally and making its spring debut, shot a 16-over 284 to stand tied for ninth place after the first day of the Ping-Arizona Intercollegiate on Monday in Tucson, Ariz.
Thirty-six holes of play were scheduled for Monday, but the second round was suspended due to darkness with all 16 teams still on the course.
The Huskies' Darren Wallace is tied for 24th, standing at even par with three holes to play in the second round after a 2-over 73 in the first. Teammate Zach Bixler is tied for 30th at 3 over, also with three second-round holes remaining; he shot a first-round 70.
Conference honors
• Yakima native Andrew Strait, a senior at Montana, has been named the Big Sky men's basketball co-player of the week.
Strait led the Grizzlies to wins over Eastern Washington and Northern Colorado, averaging 16.5 points and 10.5 rebounds.
For the week, Strait shot 81.3 percent from the field and 76 percent from the free-throw line. His field-goal percentage of 64.2 percent leads the Big Sky and ranks among the national leaders.
