The Associated Press

WASHINGTON — Even when Georgetown is a huge favorite, the Hoyas always have their hands full with Syracuse. It was no different Monday night, when No. 9 Georgetown had to rally from a seven-point deficit in the final minutes of regulation, then outscored the Orange in overtime to escape with a 64-62 victory.

Roy Hibbert scored 15 points for Georgetown, including the only field goal of overtime. The 7-foot-2 center, who has made the first two three-pointers of his college career in recent games, was left open for a 13-footer that gave the Hoyas (15-2, 5-1 Big East) a 64-60 lead with a minute remaining.

Donte Greene then made two of 3 free throws to cut the Orange's deficit to two with 44 seconds left.

Syracuse fell to 13-7, 3-4.

Other game

No. 12 Texas 63, at Oklahoma State 61

D.J. Augustin scored 26 points and Damion James added 12 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Longhorns.

Augustin scored six consecutive points as Texas (15-3, 2-1 Big 12) held Oklahoma State scoreless for a six-minute span for the second time in the game and took the lead, then hit four free throws in the final minute to keep the Cowboys (10-8, 1-3) at bay.

Notes

• Oregon State assistant Kevin Mouton will temporarily run the team after a rare midseason coaching change, which was announced Sunday night by athletic director Bob De Carolis. Jay John, in his sixth season, was fired from the team that was 6-12 and winless in the Pac-10. The school has had one winning season since 1989-90. John received a five-year contract extension in 2005. Oregon State owes him about $1.1 million.

"Sometimes things just don't work out, and that's the case here," De Carolis said. "We needed to move on. I think the weight of some of the speculation of whether it was going to happen, when it was going to happen, started weighing heavily on John and his family."

• Memphis replaced North Carolina as the No. 1 team in college basketball Monday, the Tigers' first appearance in 25 years at the top of The Associated Press poll.

Kansas, the nation's only other undefeated Division I men's team, moved up to No. 2; the Tar Heels dropped to fifth after their loss to Maryland. Washington State moved up two spots to sixth.
