NW Briefs | Cascio, Redhawks men top rival Falcons in soccer, 2-1

The Seattle University men's soccer team got two goals from Jason Cascio to defeat Seattle Pacific 2-1 Saturday afternoon at Championship Field.

The Redhawks (12-2, 4-1 Great Northwest Athletic Conference) opened scoring in the fifth minute. Dustin Allbery sprinted with the ball to the end line on an overlapping run to slip a quick pass into the box. Cascio was waiting for the pass, made a quick turn and deposited his sixth goal of the season into the back of the net.

The Falcons (6-3-5, 1-1-1) tied the score with a goal by Colin Cosco in the 54th minute.

The score remained 1-1 until late in the half when Cascio put a rebound of another Allbery shot past SPU keeper Kellen Rosten.

Women's soccer

Kara Hamby netted a goal and an assist as second-ranked Seattle Pacific stayed perfect with a 3-0 win over Saint Martin's at Interbay Stadium.

The Falcons (15-0, 9-0 GNAC) are out to the best start in SPU history. Saint Martin's dropped to 1-13, 0-9.

• Gonzaga (8-4-1, 0-1-0 West Coast Conference) fell 3-1 to host Portland.

• Katie Ellis and Amy Bostock each scored a goal to lead Northwest University (2-10-4, 2-5-2 Cascade Collegiate Conference) past Northwest Christian 2-0 in Eugene, Ore.

Volleyball

Cammy Dranginis had six kills in the fourth game as Northwest Nazarene handed Seattle Pacific (9-9, 4-6 GNAC) its third straight loss, 30-27, 30-21, 28-30, 30-19, in Nampa, Idaho. The Falcons' Alyssa Given led all players with 18 kills.

• Seattle University had its two-match winning streak snapped, falling 30-24, 30-27, 30-19 to Western Oregon in Monmouth, Ore. Nikole Thompson led the Redhawks (8-11, 5-6 GNAC) with 12 kills and 11 digs.

• Emily Castro had a match-high 11 kills as Western Washington (14-4, 10-1 GNAC) took a 30-18, 30-13, 30-24 victory over host Alaska Fairbanks.

• Lauren Holtz had 17 kills and 10 digs for Northwest U. (4-10, 3-9 CCC), but the Eagles fell 22-30, 31-29, 30-21, 30-19 to Oregon Tech in Kirkland.

• Heather Dunn had 45 assists and 12 digs in leading Gonzaga (14-7, 2-3 WCC) to a 30-20, 32-30, 30-27 victory over Portland in Spokane.

• Hayley Hills had a team-high 20 kills for Eastern Washington, but the Eagles (6-13, 5-3 Big Sky) fell 30-27, 30-20, 30-26 to host Sacramento State.

Men's tennis

Four Washington players — Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan, Andy Kuharszky, Patrik Fischer and Tobi Obenaus — won matches to advance into the round of 16 at the Wilson/ITA Northwest Regional Championships, hosted by UW at Nordstrom Tennis Center.

Women's tennis

Gonzaga's Kristen MacWilliam and Carrie Schofield won twice to reach the quarterfinals of the doubles red flight at the Saint Mary's Classic in Moraga, Calif.

Swimming

The Seattle University men tied for second, while the women's team finished fourth at the PCSC Relay Meet in Riverside, Calif.

The team of Gordon Smith, Bryant Bevers, Nathan Freeman and Chris Coley won the 800 freestyle relay in 7 minutes, 5.98 seconds. Doug Djang joined Bevers, Freeman and Smith to win the 500 freestyle relay in 4:15.91.

The best finish for the Seattle women came in the 1,500 freestyle relay, as Christina Hunsberger, Alison Colnon and Kelsey Henan placed second in 16:13.45.

Rowing

The Washington men's varsity eight opened its season by topping an eight-crew field in the Head of the Oklahoma Regatta, completing the 4,000-meter course in 13:34.85.

Washington State picked up wins in both the women's four (16:21.39) and women's eight (1:33.679).

Cross country

Washington's 12th-ranked women's team finished fourth in the White Race at the Pre-National Meet in Terre Haute, Ind. The Huskies men, ranked 27th, finished 16th out of 38 teams in the men's Blue Race.

The women's finish was the best by any UW squad, men or women, in the seven years the Huskies have competed at Pre-Nationals.

Amanda Miller and Katie Follett crossed the finish line together in 21:02, placing 35th and 36th, respectively. On the men's side, the Huskies were led by Jon Harding, who placed 52nd in 24:11.

• The Eastern Washington women's (15-41) and men's (15-47) teams both took first over Gonzaga at the fifth annual EWU Invitational in Cheney.

The Eagles' Mattie Bridgmon finished first in 18:24.3, while Paul Limpf led the EWU men with a second-place finish in 25:01.0.

Colby Litzenberger led the Bulldogs men with a 12th-place finish in 26:25.3. On the women's side, Molly Funk finished 18th in 20:13.3.
